China Mieville, Perdido Street Station

China Miéville, Perdido Street Station. This book grew on me like a harmless and grotesque tumor. At first I was annoyed by the florid language, but I stopped noticing, and then deep into the story it seemed a piece with the fecund world of New Crobuzon. Likewise the sprawl of settings and variety of organisms was messy and distracting early, but settled into complex and satisfying patterns.

I've been reading a ton of China Mieville's stuff lately. I wish all those jerks that have known about this guy for years would have informed me of how cool he is.

I'm not sure if I like him or not, yet. I'll give it another book. Which do you recommend?

I liked The City & The City a lot. The detective story aspect of it is really rote, but what Mieville is good at is writing PLACES more than writing plots. King Rat is also really good.
